Cast Iron is used in varying grades; grey, spherical, graphite, and malleable to name a few.
Whilst Cast Iron can pose problems if sound procedures are not followed it is welded every day with good success using nickel and nickel ferro based electrodes, MIG, TIG wires and oxy acetylene fusion rod or nickel based spray weld powders.
